Two of the most potent transformation symbols in the human symbolic lexicon meet in a single dream. The serpent sheds its skin; fire consumes and renews. When these appear together, the dreamer is undergoing not one but two simultaneous forms of transformation: the slow shedding of the old (snake) and the rapid consuming of what remains (fire). This is alchemical in the truest sense — the caduceus of Hermes was a winged serpent; fire was the alchemist's instrument. Something is being transformed at the deepest possible level of the instinctual self.
